Building a Dog Fence

Dogs have always been traditionally kept in kennels.

Dogs have always been traditionally kept in kennels. Kennels are usually constructed out of wood and are situated in the yard or some other place outside the home. Wooden dog fences have different styles, including lattice, picket, stockade rail and post. No matter what the style, wooden dog fences have three basic features: the post, the rails and the panels.

Kennel Posts

Kennel posts are vertical wood pieces that are firmly rooted in the earth to act as the kennel's support. These posts are responsible for holding all the other kennel components in place. Kennel posts can be set at the same level as the height of the panels or set higher for an attractive aesthetic effect.

Kennel Rails

Kennel rails are the structures that connect one post to the next one. They are the horizontal parts of a kennel and are necessary to hold the fence together and maintain its sturdiness. The panels, or the boards, are then attached to the kennel rails.

Kennel Panels

Kennel panels are the boards that make up the kennel walls. In the picket and stockade styles of kennel fences, the panels are vertical components. In open wooden kennel fence styles, such as the rail and the post, there is the absence of kennel panels, resulting in less wooden blocks to be built. The styles are distinguished by how the panels end at the top (some terminate with a pointed shape).

Indoor Kennels

As the name implies, indoor kennels are pet containments used inside the house. They are put up for a number of reasons:

1. To keep pets away from the baby's room;

2. To keep dogs out of the trash;

3. To prevent pets from escaping;

4. To keep pets and pet hair off the furniture; and

5. To restrict pets to the kitchen area.

It is easy to build your pet's indoor kennel. Most indoor kennels come with an easy-to-follow instruction manual. Just ensure that you have your pet's safety in mind and keep the indoor kennel free from rough and pointed edges.
