What are Indoor Dog Fences?

Indoor dog fences effectively keep the dogs out of the trash, saving you the time and effort it takes to pick up after an overactive dog. Indoor dog fences also help in restricting the pets to the kitchen and prevents them from escaping outdoors. Indoor dog fences also keep them off your furniture and away from the baby's room. An indoor dog fence is particularly useful if an infant in the house is allergic to pet hair. Furthermore, pets may trail in dirt, which is very unsafe for small babies.

Parts of an Indoor Pet Fencing System

1. The collar receiver -- This is worn on your dog's collar and picks up a radio signal emitted by the transmitter once your dog approaches the set boundaries. This signal alerts him and serves as a warning for him not to proceed further.

2. The transmitter -- This easily plugs into a standard outlet and emits a radio signal detected by the collar.

How to Set Up an Indoor Fence

1. Place the transmitter (a small, frisbee-sized apparatus in the shape of a disk) near the area where you want to set your boundaries.

2. Designate an area to be protected. This should be about one to ten feet in diameter.

3. Place the collar with the receiver on your dog. A warning sound will be emitted by the transmitter when your pet goes near the protected area. If your pet moves further on, a mild electric impulse is transmitted to stop your dog in its tracks.

This indoor radio fence can be used for more than one pet. However, each pet has to have a separate receiver collar.

Collar Properties

Although the water-resistant collar can be worn even while it's raining, it cannot be submerged in water. On the other hand, a waterproof collar can be submerged in water and used even when bathing or swimming.

Kinds of Indoor Radio Fences

Depending on the pet, your indoor radio system needs to vary:

1. The Stubborn Dog Receiver is used if your dog weighs 30 pounds or more and/or is extraordinarily stubborn. It has several correction levels and vibrations to go with the warning beep.

2. The Indoor Radio Fence with Deluxe Ultra-light Receiver (Model IRF-300D) is the basic model designed for any dog weighing five pounds or more.

The mild correction "buzz" that your dog will receive is only undesirable but not harmless. It is designed to correct your pet's behavior with just the right amount of discomfort. Keep in mind, though, that your pet must be at least six months old for him to safely use the indoor dog fence.
